Goal setting is important part of getting better at starcraft, but setting goals can be dangerous if you set incorrect goals. The type of goals that you set should not be about winning in any way, it needs to be all about mechanics or improving one small aspect of your play. As you get better these aspects get smaller and smaller.

The reason you don't set goals about winning games is because you can't guaranteed that with your time investment you will win a game, this will lead you to frustration and stress which we don't want :P. You want to be able to achieve your goal and it needs to feel within reach. Try not to set really ambitious goals.

Here are some examples of goals i've set myself:
Play 250 ladder games before the end of x date.
Play 10 ladder games a day.
Keep my queen energy < 30 before the 15 min mark.
Keep my money below 1k

You'll notice with some of the goals such as play so many games have a very easy to define end point but my other goals don't. I believe this is good because you feel like you are achieving something while working on your bigger harder goals of improving your mechanics. Notice how none of the goals are based around winning games at all.

So my question to you guys is do you set goals? what kind of goals do you set? if not why don't you set goals?

My goals are more to do with how I execute my build/game plan and what I'm executing incorrectly and what I am executing well. If I am executing it badly what do I need to change about it to make it more efficient? I also fiddle around a fuck ton with my timings in every match up.

Most of my goals are to do with strategy and execution (not usually mechanical).

I usually use replays to check up on stuff like how I am positioning my army, engaging in battles and decision making.

I don't read into mechanics too much since your mechanics just get better the more you play anyway.

Now you fricken understand why I get so mad at SC2.
I have goals to abide by.
They may be ridiculous goals, but they are goals none-the-less. Which is why I bloody hate losing.
I pwn n00bz, and pros too.

My primary goal is my mechanics. Always has and always be.

Always remember reading up on articles back in BW about how foreigners would believe that their mechanics would be so good and that it couldn't get any better but when they would go to Korea(NonY for example and IdrA), they realized that their mechanics were NOTHING compared to Koreans. And I believe FXOSheth said that recently as well in his recent trip to Korea, you may think your mechanics are good, but until you go to Korea you'll realize how shit they actually are.

With that being said, mechanics has always been something I always try to refine. If I lose a game because of a bad engagement, there is not much to analyze seeing that the bad engagement occured and I just need to play more to improve my Starsense and be able to distinguish good/bad positioning.

But if I lose a game after a 15minutes of macroing and my opponent just completely rolls over me, THEN I really dig into the replay and pick it apart and see what part of my mechanics is slacking.

Yes, this is a strategy game, but if you have your mechanics down to the tee, you can begin to develop your own strategies that are super refined and be able to truly figure out the flaws of the strategy you try to come up with.

That's just how I approach my gameplay. My 2 cents :).
